Upper Respiratory Infections In Cats

broken image

The upper respiratory tract is composed of the nose, throat, and sinuses. The most common causes of infections affecting the upper respiratory tract are viruses. On top of the list are feline herpesvirus and feline calicivirus. Cases are prevalent in places where cats are in close proximity with each other such as in catteries, animal shelters, and in households with several cats. The main route of transmission is inhaling aerosols that contain the viruses. The aerosols are released into the air when an infected cat sneezes or coughs. The virus can also be transmitted when sharing grooming tools, as well as food and water bowls. Unfortunately, cats that become infected can become lifetime asymptomatic carriers. This means they don’t usually manifest any symptoms of the infection but they are capable of transmitting the virus to other cats.
