When it’s colder weather outside you may need to adjust you and your dog’s walking schedule. For instance, take shorter walks in the early morning and late evening when it’s the coldest outside. Save your longer walks for midday if possible as it will be the warmest part of the day. If your dog has a thin coat (i.e. the Chihuahua, Poodle, Bichon), provide him with a winter jacket to help protect him from the cold. Dogs with thick coats (i.e. the Golden Retriever, Pomeranian, Husky, German Shepherd) will be fine outdoors with no coat. If it’s snowing, consider a rain jacket to protect our dog from the wetness especially if you are going to be out for a while. Avoid walking on icy pathways or treated sidewalks as not all ice melt is pet friendly. For more tips, talk with your vet Washington, DC.
