What are Causes of Gum Disease in Cats?

broken image

Did you know that gum disease can be a common illness in cats? It can occur in cats no matter their age, breed or sex. A cat’s gums and teeth need to be wiped down, brushed or cleaned on a routine basis especially if the cat likes to hunt outdoors and usually brings his prey (or parts) home. A good rule of thumb is to brush your cat’s teeth on a daily basis. You can do this with a vet approved toothbrush and toothpaste, pet teeth wipes, or using a mixture of baking soda and water to form a natural cleaning tooth paste. Your cat should also have a professional cleaning at least once a year. Other causes of gum disease besides basic tartar and plaque buildup include genetics, crooked and crowded teeth, diabetes, autoimmune disease, FeLV virus and FIV virus.
