What is Degenerative Joint Disease in Cats?

veterinary clinic Rochester NY

DJD or Degenerative Joint Disease is a common disease that occurs in cats no matter their sex or breed. Most cats develop the condition as they age. The disease is common in cats that are already prone to arthritis and hip dysplasia. It is often called Osteoarthritis and is often described as a chronic condition causing the deterioration of cartilage surrounding the joints. It is a long-term disease that does not have a cure. It is not the same as arthritis or other joint disease which are mostly inflammation of the joints and not deterioration. It is actually a chronic disease the occurs as the result of degeneration or deterioration of the entire joint and not partial joint. The disease can be genetic but can also be the result of other illnesses like hip dysplasia. Obesity or aging can also be a cause. For more information, talk to your veterinary clinic Rochester, NY.
