Pododermatitis is the technical term for the inflammation involving the skin tissues of the feet. There are various potential causes of the condition and the feet of affected dogs appear to have red, crusty lesions on their soles or paw pads. The paw pads may also be swollen. There are infections caused by bacteria and fungi that have been associated with pododermatitis. Other potential causes include hormonal disorders, allergies, environmental factors, or immune-related problems. Demodicosis (mange caused by Demodex mites) may also cause some cases of pododermatitis. The condition can affect dogs of all breeds but it has been commonly diagnosed males of canine breeds with short hair coats. Affected dogs may suffer from hair loss and appear to be persistently chewing and licking their feet.
