Why Do Cats Have Tails?

broken image

Cats, like canines, have tails for a variety of reasons. Also like canines, some feline breeds don’t have tails. The tails aren’t cut off as in some canine cases and some feline cases. For instance, the Japanese Bobtail doesn’t really have a tail. He has more of a nub or bobbed tail. It looks a lot like a docked tail or a tail that has been purposefully cut, but this is not the case. Other breeds like the Maine Coon cat have long and luxuriously furry tails. Why have a tail at all? Tails on cats help them stay balanced. Tails on a cat also serve as forms of communication. In fact, some cats will move their tails in up and down motions or from left to right to let other cats know that they are angry, made, sad, etc. For more information on what tail movement means, give your veterinary clinic Rochester, NY a call.
